Everyone is looking for ways to save money these days. Health care costs are continuing to rise. The United States spends more on health care than other industrialized country. Despite the high spending, Americans don’t go to the doctor very frequently. Drugs and surgeries in the US cost more than other industrialized and unindustrialized nation. Despite the fact that the US spends more on healthcare than other nation in the world, Americans don’t live longer than people in other countries that spend less on health care. To make matters worse, healthcare spending is projected to nearly double in the next decade. How does physical therapy fit into the equation? Going to a physical therapist first for your aches and pains saves money and you get better faster!!
A study in the Journal of Health Services Research in September 2011 studied the costs and number of visits to physical therapy for orthopedic conditions. The researchers wanted to see if people saved more money and got better faster if they saw their physician first or saw a physical therapist first. The study revealed that people who began treatment with a physical therapist first had 14% fewer visits and saved 13% of their money compared to those who saw their physician first. Physical Therapy saves money and you get better faster! Other studies have shown the same results.
Many of the drugs that you take when your neck or back hurts only mask the symptoms and do not fix the cause of the problem. Physical therapists treat the problem and start treatments immediately to get rid of the problem. By treating the problem, and not the symptoms, physical therapists help people get better faster and save money. If you see your primary care doctor first for a musculoskeletal injury, it may be weeks of visits to an orthopedic doctor and trips to the MRI centers to only end up seeing a physical therapist in the end.
People are becoming more and more empowered in their health care decision making. People now have the option to choose how they want to use their healthcare. Choosing a PT first is a wise decision. If you are experiencing an ache or pain, physical therapists have the answer. Do yourself, your pocket book, and the economy a favor and call us to schedule an evaluation. You will get better faster, get rid of the cause of your problem, and also save money. It doesn’t get much better than that.
